How to request Uber cleaning fee
As an Uber driver, you might have to at one stage request an Uber cleaning fee. It’s not nice, and it’s not something that you want to do. But, why should you have to pay for the mess that a rider has created?
With the Uber cleaning fee system, you can make sure you aren’t paying out of your own pocket for cleaning-up costs.
What is the Uber cleaning fee?
This is the fee that you can ask Uber to reimburse you after a rider managed to make a mess in the back-seat. From spilling a drink to dropping food on the floor, you don’t want to have to pay for that. If the condition of your car makes it hard/impossible for you to drive to the same standard, or pick up clients with confidence, you should look to request an Uber cleaning fee ASAP.
This is very important for Uber drivers – and riders – to know about. If you manage to wreck an Uber driver’s car with mess, they have the right to ask you to pay for it. Don’t think that you can just leave the car a mess: this is how they make a living, after all.
How do I get an Uber cleaning fee?
So, to start off with, you will need to make sure that you get a photo of the mess ASAP. Check the condition of your car after every trip. If something has been dropped/spilled, then you should take a photo of the damage now.
You must submit the damage report – with photos – within 48-hours of the incident taking place. If the damage is deemed appropriate, then you will often be provided with a flat fee assistance rate to help pay for the repairs and cleaning
Uber will then contact the person responsible for the incident, and will request that they pay for the cleaning fees. However, if the user then disputes their part in the process, Uber may not give you the Uber cleaning fee. Uber passes the fees on the riders, so some riders will deny their messes intentionally or not. This is why it’s very important to have as much proof as possible, take pictures!
Steps to Request Cleaning Fees
In the Uber app, you need to go to:
- Account > Help > Trips & Fare Review. Once you do this, choose the incident-ridden trip.
- Click on Rider Feedback.
- You can then use the Fare Adjustment option to Request A Cleaning Fee.
- Fill in the form, with your evidence,
- and then hit the Submit button.
- Now, you just need to wait for Uber to make a decision.
How much can I get in an Uber cleaning fee?
It really does depend on the severity of the damage. For example, Uber won’t give you any money if it can be wiped away with ease. So, for example, a water spillage won’t get you any kind of cash rebate.
However, anything from a small mess – such as significant drink spills, dirt, food droppings – could get you around $20 in credit.
If there is a mess on the exterior of the car, this could help you to get around $40 in credit.
If there’s a larger or moderate food spill inside your vehicle you may be reimbursed $80 from Uber.
The most you will receive towards your Uber cleaning fee is $150. This would mean that when there is an incident such as ‘major bodily fluid’ or extensive cleaning of the window/door and/or air vents in the car.
If you are an Uber driver, we recommend that you get vigilant about what is brought into your car. While you want as many fares as possible, remember that a messy customer could cost you more than the fare. Keep this in mind and, when appropriate, request an Uber cleaning fee request. You might not get the help that you need, but you should definitely enquire. Don’t pay out of your pocket for something you were not at fault for!
